Social media can be a very controversial subject. People may question who owns social media, and answers range from Public Relations to Marketing. However in the end, many people put social media together. I personally believe that social media is owned by nobody. If it is found on Twitter it is owned by a Public Relations group or a CRM group depending on what the topic may be. It is possible that it can also be in possession of a marketing team if there is a media budget (perhaps a commercial or advertisement). Social media should be integrated throughout a company rather than being owned by one department. It all depends on what the purpose is and what message is trying to be sent. Social Media is viewed by people around the world and is something that cannot be put together by one person.
Today is day one of the US Open Tennis tournament and you know there is going to be great coverage of it. Anyone interested can turn on ESPN, check their phones for updates, or even turn the TV on to see a match. Scores can be found on people's Twitter or Facebook accounts as well if they follow a certain player. People who work for the number one player in the world, Novak Djokovic work to keep his Twitter and Facebook interesting and up to date for fans. Djokovic has become an icon in the sport of tennis. He can be found on Facebook, Twitter as well as other various websites. Djokovic has 1,082,498 likes on Facebook and has 292,220 current followers on Twitter. This can be seen as a from of Public Relations. However, the people that work to put advertisements and commercials together use Marketers and Advertisers to put on TV, the internet, or newspapers.
Social media is found everywhere!
